Devil's Bathtub

The story

The Devil's Bathtub sits where the gorge pinches and Old Man's Creek funnels through a churning stone bowl before sliding away downstream — one of the most photographed pocket features in the park, and a marvel best enjoyed from above. The only safe vantage is the main trail: the surrounding sandstone stays wet and glassy in every season, and swimming or wading is off-limits throughout the park. Generations of tall tales have speculated about where the tub's dark outlet leads, which makes the railing a fine place to let kids form their own theories. Come early if photographs matter — the trail narrows here, and the midday crowd funnels through slowly.

See that bowl of spinning green water just below the trail? Somebody drilled a bathtub into solid rock here — and the somebody was the creek itself. This is the Devil's Bathtub, and how it got made is almost better than the name. For thousands of years, water pouring through this pinch in the gorge has been spinning sand and pebbles around and around in the same spot, like a drill bit that never gets tired. Grit, swirl, repeat — until the creek polished itself a tub smooth enough to be proud of.

Watch it work for a minute. The water comes in white, whips around the bowl, and slides out the bottom dark and quiet, like somebody pulled the drain. People used to say that drain ran all the way down to the Underworld — which is how the Devil got naming rights. People say a lot of things when a hole looks this perfect.

One thing the old-timers had dead right, though: the rocks around the tub stay slick even on dry days, so do all your looking from the trail. Besides, the tub's taken. Keep on downstream — the next bridge is where the gorge's best true story lives, and you can touch every word of it.
