Shepperd's Dell

The story

Eyes right — Shepperd's Dell sneaks up on you, a small pullout right where the road crosses a low stone bridge. Pull in, and walk to the railing. Look down into the cleft below your boots: that's the dell, a slender thread of waterfall tucked into a deep, mossy grotto so green and so enclosed it feels like the forest folded a secret into the rock and forgot to tell anybody. The creek is Young Creek, and it comes down not in one big plunge but in soft little steps, ledge to ledge. After Multnomah's six hundred and twenty feet and Latourell's clean free-fall, this one's a whisper — shy, delicate, half-hidden in fern. A short, steep paved path drops you partway down if your knees are willing; even from the railing, you'll feel the cool air rising up out of the gap and onto your face. And here's what makes me love this little spot: it isn't just pretty. It's a memorial — one of the gentlest human stories on this whole road. If you want to Stay parked a minute, I'll grab Ranger Merrick to tell you the Tale of whose grief built it.
