Spokes On A Wheel

The story

The Olympic Mountains form a roughly radial drainage system, with major rivers, including the Hoh, Quinault, Queets, Elwha, and Sol Duc, flowing outward in all directions from the high interior to the surrounding sea. Each river carves its own valley from the glaciated peaks to the coast, creating corridors that connect alpine, forest, and marine habitats across the peninsula.

Picture this peninsula from high above for a second. The high country sits in the middle like a hub, and the rivers run off it in every direction, spokes on a wheel, the Hoh, the Quinault, the Queets, the Elwha, the Sol Duck. Each one starts in snow and ice up top and carves its own valley straight down to the sea. Every river you cross today is one of those spokes. They're how the mountains shed their water, and they're the green corridors that life follows from the peaks all the way down to the surf.
