Turning From The Ocean

The story

The La Push corridor terminates near Olympic's coastal trailheads, where the forest gives way to the open Pacific. Wild beaches here feature heaped driftwood, offshore sea stacks, and abundant wildlife including bald eagles and seals. Short trails lead down from the road's end to the shore, among the most remote and undeveloped beaches in the contiguous United States.

Turning your back on the ocean is always a little hard. Take one last look in the mirror at that gray-blue line of water, then point yourself back inland through the spruce. You came all the way out to where the land quits and the sea begins, and not many roads in this country still take you anywhere that wild.
