Where The Road Runs Out

The story

The Sol Duc Road terminates at a trailhead parking area at the head of the valley, the access point for the Sol Duc Falls trail. Beyond the lot the route is foot travel only. The surrounding upper-valley forest is dense, wet old-growth, marking the deepest road-accessible point in this part of the park.

Almost there. The parking area is just ahead, where the road finally runs out and the trail takes over. Everything from here on is on foot, which is exactly how a place like this should be met. Take a breath of this damp, mossy air, because you've climbed about as deep into the Olympics as any road will carry you. Beyond the lot, the Sol Duck River is dropping through a slot canyon you can hear before you see. Get ready to park.
