Shrine Drive-Thru Tree

⏱ 15–20 min🥾 Easy, roadside📏 In Myers Flat, on the Avenue⭐ Kids, road-trip photos, old-school Americana🐾 Dog-friendly

Yes, you can drive your car through a living redwood. The Shrine Drive-Thru Tree in Myers Flat is a privately run roadside attraction and a hundred-year-old piece of road-trip history, from the days when this was the only road north and the little towns along it competed to make you stop.

It is gloriously cheesy and it’s fun. There are only a handful of drive-through trees left in the world, all of them in this corner of Northern California.

Tunnels like this were cut in the 1920s and 30s, when the automobile was new and roadside attractions were how small towns survived. A modern park would never allow it, but the tree survived, is still standing and is still growing.

Pro tip: Fold in your mirrors and check your vehicle width before you commit. Big trucks and RVs won’t fit.
