Battery Townsley

The story

Park at Rodeo Beach and hike up the Coastal Trail to a hulking WWII casemate that once housed two sixteen-inch guns. Walk the concrete exterior above the Pacific, hear why these battleship-scale weapons never fired a shot in anger, and check ahead for the limited first-Sunday interior openings.

This one you earn on foot, so leave the car right here in the Rodeo Beach lot. Battery Townsley isn't a drive-up. To reach it you'll climb the Coastal Trail, roughly half a mile uphill, and it is a genuine workout. Figure about a mile round trip by the time you're back, so bring water, wear real shoes, and take the switchbacks at your own pace. The reward waiting at the top is worth every step.

What you'll find up there is a mountain of concrete built into the headland during the Second World War, a casemate so massive it looks like the hillside grew a bunker. Townsley was made to house two enormous sixteen-inch guns, the kind of artillery you'd expect on a battleship. Each one could throw a shell some twenty-five miles out past the Golden Gate, far over the water, reaching for any threat that might approach the coast. Stand at the mouth of it and try to picture that range, a quarter of the way to the horizon and then some.

Here's the thing to hold onto, though. For all that firepower, these guns were never fired at an enemy. No shot from this coast was ever aimed at a real attack. Townsley stood ready, watched the sea, and the war ended without it ever being called on. It's a monument to preparation, not to battle.

Most days you can walk the exterior and peer in, and that alone is striking. The interior gets opened up on a limited basis, generally the first Sunday of the month, staffed by volunteers who'll walk you through the gun chambers. Times shift, though, so check the Golden Gate National Recreation Area website before you count on getting inside. Even if the doors are shut, the outside is more than enough to make the climb pay off. Take care near the edges up top, stay on the trail, and enjoy that hard-won ocean view before you head back down.
