The last and most photographed cabin on the loop — home of a Civil War veteran wounded at Shiloh, set in a grove famous for spring dogwoods.
This is the Carter Shields Cabin — the last historic structure on the loop, and for a lot of people, the one they remember best. In spring, when the dogwoods bloom white all around it and the light comes slanting through the trees, this little cabin is probably the single most photographed spot in Cades Cove.
The name comes from George Washington 'Carter' Shields, a Civil War veteran. Shields was badly wounded — crippled — at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862, one of the bloodiest fights of the entire war. He carried that wound the rest of his life. Years later, in 1910, he bought this place and settled into this quiet corner of the cove.
And that's what makes this cabin land the way it does. There's something fitting about a man who survived Shiloh — who saw that much horror — choosing to live out his years in a spot this peaceful, tucked into a grove at the far end of the valley, the mountains standing guard all around. Whatever he'd been through, he found this.
It's a fine place to let the whole loop settle on you. Behind you is a valley full of cabins and churches and barns, and the people who raised them out of nothing but timber, stone, and stubbornness. Ahead, the road curves back toward where you started. Boone's saved his hardest story for right about here — because the last chapter of Cades Cove isn't about who moved in. It's about who had to leave.
