Driving It Well — a stop on M-22 North.
A short practical word, since we're about halfway and this road gets busy.
M-22 is a two-lane road with a lot of people on it who are not really watching the road — they're watching the water, or looking for a turn, or stopping abruptly for a photograph. Leave more following distance than you normally would. If a line builds up behind you because you're going slowly, use a pull-off and let them by; it's the local etiquette and it prevents the stupid pass on a blind curve.
Cyclists are everywhere on this route in summer — it's a famous ride — and the shoulder is often nonexistent. Give them a full lane when you pass.
Deer are a genuine hazard at dawn and dusk through the wooded sections, and there are wild turkeys that will walk out in front of you with total confidence.
Cell coverage is patchy in the park sections and around the dunes; download your map before you need it. Gas is limited between Empire and Northport, so fill up when you see a station rather than assuming there's another one.
And the big one, which I'll say once more: park in the pull-offs, not on the shoulder or in the travel lane. Every year somebody gets hit doing exactly that on this road.
