Fresh Water in a Salty Land

The story

Now that you've seen Lake Shelby, let me tell you why it's stranger and more special than it looks — a big bowl of fresh water sitting right up against the salty sea.

You'd think, this close to the Gulf, that any water behind the dunes would be brackish, half-salt. But Lake Shelby and its sisters, Middle and Little Lake, are fresh — fed by springs and rain, clear and sweet, close enough to the beach that you could practically throw a shell from one to the other. Lakes like these, cupped in the low ground right behind a line of coastal dunes, are genuinely uncommon; some folks reckon this kind of dune-backed freshwater lake is among the rarer landforms anywhere in the world. There are only a handful of coasts that have them.

And what that means is a doubling of the world. In the space of a few hundred yards, this park gives you two completely different kingdoms. Out front: salt, surf, sea turtles, and that endangered mouse in the dunes. Just behind: fresh water, cypress and pine, largemouth bass, wading herons, and — yes — alligators, sunning on the banks, perfectly at home. Two ecosystems that should be a hundred miles apart, laid side by side with just a wall of sand between them.

It's why this little park punches so far above its weight for wildlife. Fresh water is life, especially on a hot coast, and every creature for miles knows where to find it. So when you look at Lake Shelby, don't just see a pretty pond. See a rare and generous accident of geography — a freshwater oasis a stone's throw from the sea, doubling everything that can live here.
