How the Herd Really Works

Let me tell you how to actually read these horses, because there's a whole society out there on the sand, and once you see how it's organized, you'll never look at them as just 'wild ponies' again.

The herd isn't one big happy family. It's broken into small bands — usually a single stallion with a few mares and their young. That stallion is the boss and the bodyguard, and he spends his whole life on edge: watching for danger, and watching for other stallions who'd like to steal his mares. Then there are the bachelors — young stallions with no band of their own yet, running in loose gangs, waiting and scheming for their chance. When two stallions clash over mares, it is not cute. It's screaming, rearing, biting, hooves flying — a real and dangerous fight.

Now you understand why the forty-foot rule isn't the park being fussy. Walk up to a band with a phone out, and to that stallion you're one more threat to his mares, and he may come at you exactly the way he'd come at a rival — teeth and hooves. People have been badly bitten, kicked, and knocked flat doing something as innocent as trying for a selfie. These are not petting-zoo animals wearing a costume of wildness. They are wild, and the wildness goes all the way down.

So love them from a distance — and watch the little dramas play out. See which stallion is nervous, which mare has a new foal tucked at her side, which bachelor is drifting too close and about to get run off. That's the real show on Assateague.
