And here's Milford, the pretty river town where our drive comes to rest. Take a minute here — it's a genuine old place, full of Victorian storefronts and shade trees, with good food and a walkable main street after a day on the road.
Milford has more history than a town this size has any right to. Just outside it stands Grey Towers, the grand stone home of Gifford Pinchot — the father of American forestry and the first chief of the US Forest Service, a man who did as much as anyone to save the American woods. And back down along the river you passed the Marie Zimmermann farm — the summer place of a remarkable woman, one of the finest metalsmiths and jewelers of the early twentieth century, whose work is treasured to this day. This quiet valley has drawn extraordinary people for a long time.
