Moss Glen Falls — Right Beside the Road

The story

Moss Glen Falls — Right Beside the Road — a stop on Vermont Route 100.

On your right — and you almost cannot miss it — is Moss Glen Falls, and this is the easiest spectacular waterfall in Vermont. There's a pull-off and a short boardwalk, and the falls are RIGHT there: a tall, many-stepped cascade sliding down a mossy rock face into the gulf, maybe a hundred and twenty-five feet of it, with no hiking whatsoever required.

One important note, because people get this wrong constantly: there are TWO Moss Glen Falls in Vermont. This one is in Granville, right on Route One Hundred. The other is up near Stowe, and it's a completely different waterfall requiring an actual walk. If you've read about one and are looking at the other, that's why the descriptions don't match.

This one is at its most dramatic in spring melt or after heavy rain; in a dry August it's a modest trickle down a very pretty wall. In deep winter it freezes into a column of ice that climbers occasionally get on.

The boardwalk is short and accessible. Stop, take two minutes, and listen — because the other thing about this gulf is the quiet. There's no traffic noise, no houses, nothing. Just water on rock.
