As the forest opens on your right, that sharp rocky peak standing off to the south is Mount Chocorua — one of the most photographed mountains in all of New England, and one of the most storied. Its bare stone summit and perfect reflection in the lake at its foot have drawn painters and photographers for two centuries. It carries the name of a Pemigewasset chief, and the tale of how he died up on that peak is a dark and famous one — the kind of story Boone would tell if we had one more mile of mountain.
