The 53-ft plunge of Muddy Creek Falls — the highest free-falling waterfall in the state.
And here's the star of the whole park — Muddy Creek Falls. Watch as Muddy Creek reaches the edge of a great rock ledge and simply lets go, dropping fifty-three feet in one clean, free-falling curtain of white water into the misty pool below. That makes it the highest free-falling waterfall in the entire state of Maryland — and standing at its foot, feeling the cool damp air it throws off, you'll understand why people have come to this spot for well over a century.
There's a boardwalk and viewing deck that lets you see it from top to bottom without ever setting foot on the dangerous wet rock — use them. In spring and after a good rain it absolutely roars; in a dry spell it turns to a gauzy veil; and in October it comes framed in gold and crimson leaves. However you catch it, stand a while. This is one of the loveliest sights in Maryland, and Boone will tell you about some famous folks who felt the very same way, right where you're standing.
