Oh! Ridge

Oh! Ridge

The story

Coming up on the left is the turnoff for Oh! Ridge — and yes, that is its real, official name, punctuation included. It's named for what people say when they come over the rise and the view hits them: June Lake spread below, Carson Peak standing over it like a wall, and the recorded human response, apparently unanimous, is 'Oh!'

It makes a fine last stop before you leave the loop. Take the signed turn and follow it a half mile to the overlook and the sandy beach below — one of the few real swimming beaches in the Eastern Sierra, and by August the water is actually warm enough to use it.

It's also the best parting look at the shape of this whole valley: that curved wall of rock was cut by the Rush Creek glacier splitting around harder stone, and every lake you passed today sits in a trench it dug.

After the overlook, back on One Fifty-Eight, the junction with Three Ninety-Five is just a couple of minutes ahead.
