Oxbow Bend

The story

Oxbow Bend Turnout is a paved pullout on the right where a slow channel of the Snake River curves toward the road. On calm days the water reflects Mount Moran, which makes it a favorite at sunrise and sunset. Everything can be seen from the pullout, and pets are allowed only on the paved parking area. The still water draws fish and the animals that hunt them, so ospreys, eagles, pelicans and moose are all possible, while swans, otters and bears are occasional. Water level varies with releases from the dam upstream. A visit can run from five minutes to an hour, and a longer talk plays for those who stay.

Still water. Oxbow Bend Turnout opens on your right, so ease in, and turn right when you're done. This is a stop to linger over, anywhere from five minutes to an hour, and if I cut out when you shut the car off, tap play. Once you've stopped, look back the way you came. If you're rolling, don't turn around. It's behind you, and you'd need to pull in to see it. On a calm day that's Mount Moran standing in the river, the mountain and its reflection in one frame. Sunrise and sunset draw the photographers, and you can see all of it from the pullout. Pets stay on the pavement. The odd thing is how slow the Snake runs here, deep and tranquil. The mountains may be the reason. As the fault tilted the valley floor back toward them, it may have lifted a lip of bedrock just downstream, near where Pacific Creek comes in, and backed this stretch up behind it. So the fault that built the view may have built the mirror, too. Slow water means fish, and fish bring everybody else, otters, ospreys, bald eagles and white pelicans. Parked? Stay a while, and I'll tell you who else to look for.
