Riverbank Road — the north shore home (Detroit mainland across the channel)

The story

The island's quiet north shore, where Riverbank Road curves home and Detroit's everyday riverfront sits close across the channel. A new island-ringing cycle track and Olmsted's surviving canals trace the park's long habit of reinventing itself.

Riverbank Road runs you home now, the loop straightening out along the island's quiet north side. That low green shoreline sliding by across the narrow channel is the Detroit mainland — the city's east-side riverfront and the RiverWalk, close enough you could just about wave to the joggers on it. This is Detroit seen from its own front porch: not the postcard skyline, that was off the west tip behind you, but the everyday city living right at the water's edge. Nod inland a moment, toward the middle of the island, and picture the chain of canals and little lakes threading through the trees — gently curving water where folks still slip along by canoe and kayak on a warm afternoon. Here's a small, honest footnote: that winding chain of water is about the only piece of Olmsted's original vision the city ever actually dug. Most of what he drew for this island never got built — too costly, the city said, and after defending his plan a couple of years the man finally resigned over it — but the canals did get dug, and a century on they're still here. And look to the shoulder: that fresh two-way cycle track ringing the island went in this very year, twenty twenty-six. Belle Isle reinventing itself one more time, the way it always has. Now ease the car and let it go gentle. There's one last stop ahead before the bridge — and it's the one where the whole island's story, every piece of it you've heard today, finally pulls together.
