Just here is the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, and it's worth a stop — it's free, and it's housed in a building the CCC themselves put up back in the nineteen thirties. If you don't know the CCC, they were one of the finest things to come out of the Great Depression: an army, not of soldiers, but of young men — millions of them nationwide — put to work in the woods during the hardest years this country ever had. Inside you'll find their photographs, their tools, their letters home, and the story of how they built the very trails and catwalks and pavilions you'll use today — by hand, with axes and shovels and mule teams. Step in and meet them; then we'll drive the roads they cut through this jungle.
