The Night They Dug the Lake Open

The story

Now hold on there — because back at that quiet little harbor we passed, a whole town once picked up shovels and changed the map of Michigan in an afternoon. Ranger Merrick, at your service.

Picture Onekama in eighteen seventy-one. Portage Lake sits behind a bar of sand, cut off from the big lake. And there's a mill at the outlet with a dam, and that dam is holding the water in Portage Lake higher than nature ever put it. Which is fine if you own the mill. It is not fine if you're a farmer on the shore watching your fields go under, year after year, and your fences rot, and your ground turn to marsh.

So they did what people do. They asked. They petitioned. They went to law. And they got nowhere, because the mill had money and they had mud.

And here's the turn. On a spring day, the men of that township walked down to the sand bar between their drowned farms and Lake Michigan, and they started to dig. Not a lawsuit. A trench. By hand, with shovels, across the bar toward the big water — a few feet at a time, everybody's neighbor working alongside.

They got it through. And the moment that little trench touched Lake Michigan, the lake behind them found its way out — and it went. What was a channel a man could straddle in the morning was, by evening, a torrent ripping its own way to the shore, tearing out sand and trees and everything else. Portage Lake dropped like somebody had pulled a plug. The dam and the argument went with it.

And it never went back. That cut is the harbor channel today. Boats run through it, kids fish off it, and nobody stopping for gas in Onekama has the faintest idea that the water under that bridge is there because a township full of angry farmers got tired of waiting on a judge.

I'm not going to tell you that's how you ought to settle a dispute. I'll only say that of everything on this coast, that channel is the one piece of it that ordinary people made with their own hands in a single day — and it has outlasted every man who dug it.
