Stop here and just take it in. Below you and ahead, the first palm grove, a stand of California fan palms holding their ground in a fold of bare stone. You can read the fire in them, the blackened trunks, the gaps where palms once stood shoulder to shoulder. But look closer and you'll see the green, new fronds pushing up, seedlings taking hold, an oasis insisting on its own return. What makes any of this possible is water, and water in a desert is never an accident. There's a fault line running right through this canyon, and where the rock is broken and squeezed, it forces a hidden flow up to the surface. That trickle is everything. It threads down the wash and stitches a green seam through the gray, and the palms simply follow the water. Stand a moment and notice the air, how it cools as you near the grove, how birdsong gathers here that you didn't hear below. Even fire-scarred, an oasis is still an oasis, still the beating heart of the desert, still the one cool breath in a hard, bright land. It's healing. Slower than we'd like, but surely. When you're ready, turn back the way you came, and carry the picture of it down the canyon with you.
