Across a single mile of water sits Canada — Windsor, Ontario, and the international border running down the channel. For thousands fleeing slavery, that far shore was freedom itself, and this same river was the last line to cross.
Ease off the gas here, and look across the water to the south. That far shore — close enough to make out the buildings — is another country. Windsor, Ontario, Canada, a mile off across the channel, and the line between two nations runs right down the middle of this water you're driving beside. Take that in for a second. You are sitting in the United States, looking across an international border at a foreign land, and the only thing between here and there is a single mile of river. For most of us that's just a pretty view. But there was a time when that far shore was the most important piece of ground in a person's whole life — when reaching it meant everything. Boone's going to tell you about that. Ease the car to a stop if you can, and give him your ear for this one.
