When to Drive This Loop

The story

While the road runs quiet here, let me give you the loop by season, because this is four different drives wearing the same number.

FALL is the headliner. Late September through mid-October the aspen go off like a slow gold explosion — Reversed Creek, the west shore of Gull, the canyon behind Silver Lake — and this becomes, mile for mile, the best fall-color drive in California. Photographers plan years around it. The trade is weekend traffic; come midweek, or come at dawn, when the light is better anyway.

SUMMER is the classic family season — warm days, cold lakes, every campground full, the beach at Oh! Ridge actually swimmable by August. Afternoon thunderstorms build over the crest in July and August; if you're hiking, be off the high trails by early afternoon.

WINTER, remember, the far half of this road closes — but the village half becomes its own destination: June Mountain's uncrowded powder, ice on the lakes, and a town of a few hundred that suddenly feels like it's yours. Chains or good snow tires are non-negotiable up here.

And SPRING is the sleeper — waterfalls at full roar off Carson Peak, the lakes brimming with snowmelt, and almost nobody on the road. Locals will deny telling you this.
