Boone at the Mountain

The story

Ranger Boone Merrick introduces himself at the western gateway of the Mohawk Trail.

Boone Merrick here — glad to ride along. Quinn'll keep you pointed the right way; my job's the stories, and this road's got them stacked up like cordwood.

You're starting under Mount Greylock, the biggest mountain in the state, named for a chief who never once lost a fight to the men who came for his country. That ought to tell you what kind of road this is — the kind where every mile's got somebody's whole life folded into it. Between here and the river on the far side, I'll tell you about a footpath older than any king, a town marched off into the snow, and a hole in a mountain they called the Bloody Pit. So settle in and keep your ears open. We're going up the Trail.
