Boone at the River

The story

Ranger Boone Merrick introduces himself at the eastern gateway of the Mohawk Trail.

Boone Merrick again, and here at the end I'll say it plain — it's been a pleasure. You've heard a fair pile of tales between the mountains and this river: the old footpath, the stolen town, the Bloody Pit, the whale on the mountain. That's the thing about a road this old. It's not just pavement. It's a thousand years of people going somewhere, and every one of them left a little of their story in the dirt.

Down there runs the Connecticut, patient as ever, and it'll outlast every tale I've got. Thank you kindly for letting me tell you a few of them. Drive safe now — and if a story stuck with you, come back up the Trail and I'll tell you the ones I didn't get to.
