The third and slenderest of Niagara's falls, and its most graceful. Where the American Falls is a broad wall of water, Bridal Veil comes down as a single fine, lacy ribbon, slipping over the edge beside little Luna Island and sharing only a sliver of the river. From this overlook the view drops straight to its base, where the wooden walkways of the Cave of the Winds — the famous Hurricane Deck — put ponchoed visitors within a few feet of the falling water. From above it looks soft and gentle; down at the foot, it roars like a storm. It's a free, ticketless look at the same water people pay to stand beneath, and a quietly perfect frame of Niagara at its most delicate against all the surrounding thunder.
What you're looking at here is Bridal Veil — the third of Niagara's falls, and the slenderest by far. Where the American Falls is a broad wall of falling water, this one comes down narrow and fine, a single delicate ribbon slipping over the edge right beside little Luna Island, which is what splits it off from its bigger neighbor in the first place. Bridal Veil shares only a sliver of the whole river — the American and Bridal Veil together carry just about a tenth of Niagara's flow, the great Horseshoe across the way takes the other ninety percent — and you can see that scarcity in how fine and graceful this one falls. This is Niagara at its most lacy and delicate, a soft trailing veil against all that thunder, and it's exactly how it earned the name. Now look straight down, all the way to the foot of it. Those wooden walkways at the very base are the Hurricane Deck — the boardwalks of the Cave of the Winds — and those bright little specks in yellow ponchos are people standing right where Bridal Veil lands, getting absolutely hammered by the spray. It's a wonderful trick of perspective: from up here on the rim it looks like the gentlest thing in the park, a quiet white ribbon. Down there at its base, those folks will swear it roars and beats at them like a full gale. Hold that picture, because the way down into it is just ahead, and I'll tell you all about it in a moment.
