Sunrise Viewpoint Trail — the walk out

The story

A short, easy ridge trail from the Hurricane Ridge area out to the Sunrise Viewpoint — minutes on foot to a sweeping overlook of the glaciated interior Olympics; unforgettable at dawn.

Pull in and park here — this is the one I've been saving. An easy trail runs out along the ridge, a little over a mile, to a viewpoint that, at the right hour, is about the most beautiful thing in this whole park. They call it the Sunrise Viewpoint, and the name is a promise: come at first light and you'll see why. Even at midday it stops you — the whole glaciated heart of the Olympics laid out across the valley. Take the trail slow, breathe that thin alpine air, and listen for the marmots whistling in the meadow. I'll meet you out at the edge.
