The Footpath on the Ridge

The story

The Appalachian Trail along the Kittatinny crest through the park.

Keep an eye out along the road for white paint blazes on the trees and for hikers with big packs — because the Appalachian Trail runs right along this ridge, through the heart of this park. The A.T. is the granddaddy of American footpaths, some twenty-two hundred miles from Georgia all the way to Maine, and this stretch of it rides the Kittatinny crest with those same three-state views you're enjoying from the car.

For a thru-hiker walking the whole trail, High Point is a real landmark — the roof of New Jersey, a place to stop and look out over how far they've come and how far there is to go. If you see one, give a wave. They've earned the view even more than we have.
