Tipton Place

The story

A two-story cabin of the 1870s and one of the finest cantilever barns in the Smokies.

Ahead on your right is the Tipton Place — and while the two-story cabin is worth a walk-through, the real star here is the barn.

The homestead traces to the Tipton family; Colonel Hamp Tipton's grandson built the two-story house you see in the 1870s. Later the place passed to a blacksmith, and you can still find the blacksmith shop, the smokehouse, the corn crib, and an apiary — a bee yard — scattered across the grounds. But walk over to that big barn and look at how it's built.

This is a cantilever barn — one of the signature structures of the Smoky Mountains, and honestly one of the cleverest pieces of folk engineering you'll find anywhere. The idea is simple and brilliant: the upper level, the hayloft, is built much wider than the log pens holding it up, so it overhangs — cantilevers — out past its base on all sides. That overhang does real work. It shelters livestock and equipment from rain and sun underneath, keeps the log cribs dry so they last, and gives you covered space without the cost of more foundation. Mountain farmers built these by eye, without engineers, and they've stood for well over a century. This particular barn was carefully reconstructed in 1968 to preserve the design.

Stand under the overhang and look up at how the loft floats out over your head. Then picture a cove full of these, because there once was.
