The story
The Army pitched camp on ground that was already crowded with history — Indigenous homeland and a Hudson's Bay Company fur post. Discover the layers stacked beneath the barracks lawn.
Face the fort below you and roll the clock back. When the United States Army arrived here in eighteen forty-nine, they did not come to empty ground. This place was home to Indigenous communities, and more recently to the British Hudson's Bay Company, who had built Fort Vancouver down the hill. The Army settled in right on top of that layered history. When you are ready, walk west along the sidewalk toward the flagstaff. If you are able, turn left onto the gravel path into the field and stop in front of it.
