Now, a word about that great rock you spent time with back there — because whether you climbed it or not, this one bears repeating. If you hiked to the top, Boone will have told you, up there on the trail, what you were really standing on. And if you sat this one out — drove on past, or waited with the car while the ambitious folks climbed — then you especially don't want to miss it, because it's the strangest fact of the whole day. So here it is, one more time, plain and clear: let me tell you exactly what Beacon Rock is.
It's a volcanic plug — sometimes called a volcanic neck. Roughly fifty-seven thousand years ago, a small volcano erupted right here, one of dozens of little volcanoes scattered around this part of the gorge that geologists call the Boring Volcanic Field — named for the town of Boring, Oregon, not for the scenery.
When a volcano like that goes quiet, the lava sitting in its throat cools and hardens into a column of solid rock — the plug. Around it sits the cone itself, built of loose ash and cinders, soft stuff. Now give it tens of thousands of years, add a river and the greatest floods in the world, and the soft cone erodes away entirely — while the hard plug in the middle just stands there. That's Beacon Rock: the frozen throat of a dead volcano, with everything else stripped away around it.
That's why it's so sheer, so solid, and so tall — eight hundred and forty-eight feet of essentially one piece of stone. It's often ranked second only to the Rock of Gibraltar among the great standalone monoliths of the world. Sailors on the river below called it a beacon — never knowing they were steering by the frozen heart of a volcano. Take one last look at it in your mirror as it slips behind us; that old fire's been cold for fifty thousand years, but it still owns this bend in the river.
