Three States, One View

The story

The ridge-top panorama — the Delaware Valley, the Catskills, the Poconos — at peak foliage.

Out along the ridge here, pull off wherever you safely can and just look, because this is one of the great long-views in the Northeast. You're standing on the Kittatinny Ridge, a long stony wall of a mountain that runs for miles, and from up here the land falls away on every side. To the west, that silver thread in the valley is the Delaware River, with Pennsylvania's Pocono hills rising beyond it. Swing your eyes north and those blue ranges are the Catskills of New York. And south and east, it's New Jersey all the way to the haze.

Now imagine all of that — three states, a hundred ridgelines — set on fire in the third week of October, when the oaks go bronze and the maples go scarlet and gold and the whole world below you turns to flame. That's why people drive up here in the fall. There is no bad time on this ridge, but that is the best.
